Get Smart with Art

Get Smart with Art is a three part program for grades 4–12 that supports the California state content standards in language arts, social studies and visual arts. The program includes free curriculum materials and consists of:

  1. Visit prepration: teachers prepare students with Get Smart with Art curriculum in their classrooms before visiting the museum.
  2. Gallery tour: docents lead students through the galleries and highlight works studied in the classroom, encouraging dialogue about the art and cultures represented.
  3. Studio art activity: students will be asked to make connections to and explore artistic processes related to the artworks viewed in the galleries.

Tour Availability

  • Registration for school programs (October 9, 2018–May 24, 2019) will open July 9, 2018. Requests will be processed in the order received.
  • Get Smart with Art guided visits are offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 am and 10:45 am.
  • Please note that the guided tour and studio art activity require a two-hour commitment.
  • Groups are not scheduled on the first free Tuesday of every month.

  • A minimum of 8 weeks' advance notice is required. All requests are subject to availability.
  • The maximum size of a class group is 30 students; the only exceptions is 6th grade Get Smart with Art at the Legion of Honor, which can accommodate up to 90 students. Larger groups require multiple slots. 
  • Though Get Smart with Art is free, reservations must be held with a deposit check of $100 made out to COFAM. Deposits will be returned after your visit. Checks are only deposited in case of no-show or cancelation with less than three weeks' notice.
  • A minimum of one adult chaperone is required for every 10 students.
