On the Edge Honoree: John Maeda

John Maeda is a renowned technologist, designer, artist, investor, writer, and teacher whose career reflects his philosophy of humanizing technology. For more than a decade, he has worked to integrate technology, education, and the arts into a 21st-century synthesis of creativity and innovation. In his books and onstage, Maeda champions the necessary role that artists and designers play in the new creative economy.

Maeda serves on the boards of Sonos and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. He was recently appointed chief experience officer at Publicis Sapient, the technology consulting and delivery arm of communications conglomerate Publicis. He has held positions with Automattic, the parent company of and the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, and he has served as president of the Rhode Island School of Design. He began his early career at the MIT Media Lab at the intersection of computer science and visual art.

Named one of the “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century” by Esquire, Maeda is the author of several celebrated books, including The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership.
