Wednesdays–Sundays, 1–5 pm
Plus Friday Nights 6–8:45 pm
Artist Jenny E. Balisle invites visitors to engage in an exploration of pattern through the de Young's artwork, architecture, and park setting. Balisle’s practice incorporates work in three separate media: abstract paintings, pen and ink drawings, and sculptural installations made from heated acrylic sheets. These pieces are conceptually linked by an interest in dichotomous relationships—the simple and the complex, the beautiful and the grotesque, micro and macro perspectives, and natural and man-made environments. As Artist-in-Residence she will investigate the museum’s incredible diversity of collections inside and out during the month of September.
Projects in the Kimball Education Gallery will encourage guests to discover and share the de Young’s wide selection of patterns. They will have the opportunity to draw their favorite patterns on sticky notes and place them inside a large circle on the wall, creating a living documentation of the museum. Balisle will make art inspired by the de Young, including a 42 x 360 in. drawing that viewers are welcome to discuss and observe from start to finish. Artworks produced through research will also be on display, with interactive descriptions and educational resources provided.
