James A. Ganz, curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, and curator of Jewel City: Art from San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exposition facilitates a discussion of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and its art program, presented with the support of the Achenbach Graphic Arts Council. Lecture titles and speakers include:
"Miniature Immensity: the Panama Canal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition" by Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, professor, History of Art, UC Berkeley. Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby is professor of the History of Art and Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Arts and Humanities at UC Berkeley. She is author of Extremities. Painting Empire in Post-Revolutionary France; Colossal. Engineering the Suez Canal, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and Panama Canal that concerns Franco-American rivalries of scale; and Enduring Truths. Sojourner’s Shadows and Substance. Her current book-in-progress, Creole Looking. Portraying France’s Foreign Relations in the Nineteenth Century, examines France’s relationship to the Caribbean and Americas.
"In the Shadow of War" by Jo-Anne Birnie-Danzker, director, Frye Art Museum, Seattle. Jo-Anne Birnie-Danzker is director of the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and former director of the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, Germany, and the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada. She has served as exhibition director and curator of numerous exhibitions on the history of the modern in these institutions and at Martin-Gropius-Bau and Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; International Center of Photography, MoMA- PS1; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Kunsthal Rotterdam. At the Frye Art Museum, Birnie Danzker’s publications have included Franz von Stuck (2013), Gabriel von Max (2011), and Séance: Albert von Keller and the Occult (2010).
“Inventing a New ‘Old Tradition’: Chinese Art at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition” by Katharine Burnett, associate professor, Chinese Art & Culture, Art History Department, UC Davis. Katharine Burnett teaches courses in Chinese art history at UC Davis. She has published on the importance of conceptual originality in 17th-century Chinese art, and is working on a book about an important early 20th-century Chinese collector, Pang Yuanji. Director of the East Asian Studies Program, and co-chair of the Department of Art and Art History, she also is Faculty Leader for UCD's new Global Tea Initiative.
"Golden Dream in the Jewel City: Japan's National Pavilion at the PPIE" by Hannah Sigur, lecturer, Japanese Art, Art History Department, UC Davis. Hannah Sigur, PhD, Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, a specialist on the arts and architecture of Meiji Japan, teaches various courses in Asian Art history at UC Davis, and San Francisco State University. Her research includes international expositions 1862–1915, the globalization of Western ideologies in architecture and material culture, and the designs of Christopher Dresser. Her book, The Influence of Japanese Art on Design (2008), concerns Japonisme.
