Still Life Dances is a movement project created by choreographers Lauren Simpson and Jenny Stulberg. Taking inspiration and compositional direction from still life paintings in the deYoung’s collection, the choreographers create a series of dances based on the following famous works. The dance Still Life No. 1 is based on Raphaelle Peale’s Blackberries, Still Life No. 2 is based on William Harnett’s After the Hunt, and Still Life No. 3 is based on David Ligare’s Still Life with Grape Juice and Sandwiches. At Friday Nights at the deYoung, you will see excerpts of Still Life No.s 1 and 2 in various galleries on the first floor while viweing the original paintings on which these dances were based upon in Gallery 25.
Lauren Simpson and Jenny Stulberg are local choreographers, performers, and dance educators. Together, they have presented work at ODC Theater, University of San Francisco, Lines Ballet, and the Joe Goode Annex. Simpson and Stulberg are in a choreographic residency with San Francisco-based dance company, FACT/SF. Lauren teaches at the University of San Francisco and ODC; she received an MFA from the University of Colorado and EdM from Harvard University. Jenny teaches at Santa Rosa College and received her MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.
