From Recife, Brazil, saxophonist Spok, leader of the groundbreaking "SpokFrevo Orquestra", brings together a group of expert musicians for a special evening of Brazilian rhythms at the deYoung.
Spok was this year's honoree at Recife's gigantic Carnaval, and for many years has been an international ambassador for Frevo, the joyful Carnaval music from the state of Pernambuco.
At the invitation of Wynton Marsalis, Spok has brought his big band to perform at Lincoln Center. Joining Spok at the deYoung will be Brazilian pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, who plays regularly with clarinetist Anat Cohen and has toured with such Brazilian luminaries as Maria Bethania and Hermeto Pascoal. The concert will also feature Bay Area based musicians Brian Rice--drums/percussion, Scott Thompson--bass, Harvey Wainapel--saxophone, Jeff Cressman--trombone, and vocalist Sandy Cressman.
Programming and general admission to the permanent collection galleries are free of charge during Friday Nights at the de Young. A discounted $15 ticket is required to visit the special exhibition galleries.
