Join us for Friday Nights at the de Young! This special Fall season runs every Friday through November 23. All Friday Nights feature reduced admission to the special exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions, and free admission to the main-level galleries. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended.
Friday Night, November 9, our annual Bransten Lecture welcomes one of our most influential contemporary American artists, Carrie Mae Weems, to talk about her work, including her video installation Lincoln, Lonnie, and Me, on view in the de Young exhibition Specters of Disruption. Purchase tickets and find more information about this lecture here.
Tonight in Wilsey Court, we bring the powerful sounds of the fantastic Balinese music and dance ensemble, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, with performances from two different ensembles: the interlocking melodies of Bali’s bronze gamelan gong kebyar and the sounds of the giant bamboo West Balinese gamelan jegog. The performance also features a dynamic range of traditional Balinese dance. Gamelan Sekar Jaya's Guest Directors, renowned musician and composer, I Nyoman Windha, and dancers, I Made Moja and Shoko Yamamuro, will lead 45 performers in this concert.
Inspired by the art and fashion of Contemporary Muslim Fashions? Get your creativity on at our art-making station in the Piazzoni Murals Room. A selection of food and drink will be available from the Museum Cafe, including halal choices and creative non-alcoholic “mocktails.” Another not-to-be-missed Friday Night experience is the James Turrell Skyspace (located in the Osher Sculpture Garden), which activates and begins to change color 20 minutes before sunset each night.
Admission is free to the main-level galleries and performances in Piazzoni Murals Room and Wilsey Court. Tickets to Contemporary Muslim Fashions are reduced to $14 adult and $6 youth on Friday Nights between 5–8:30 pm. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended.
