Session 1: Identity Exploration
Facilitators: Jennifer Bloomer and Shelley Kuang. An important step in anti-racist action is better understanding ourselves and the lens we use to see the world. In this session, families will use art to explore elements that make up our individual identities. Participants will learn how to use paint to mix unique skin color and explore paintings from the DeYoung collection to better understand how famous artists have used color in their work. They will also look at the other aspects of their identities that shape how they see the world, including culture, religion, age, gender, native language, country of origin, values, and more. During the course of the workshop, the facilitator will walk through the process of creating a framed self portrait while sharing tools for gaining confidence and capacity to have honest conversations about race and racism with your kids.
Join Fine Arts Museums in this three-part series exploring what it means to become an anti-racist family. Inclusivity is central to our teaching practices as we host families from the Bay Area to engage with objects from across the globe. We offer this series of family art making sessions and discussions to explore the question together: “What does it mean to become an antiracist family?” We are grateful to offer this series in partnership with Be the Change Consulting and Radici Studios.
This three-part series will occur every fourth Saturday from 10–11:30 am PST on Zoom.
