Cinemascope is a new film series for Enthusiast and Partner members of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. We hope you’ll join us for our inaugural celebration of the silver screen in conjunction with the special exhibition Cult of the Machine (March 24–August 12, de Young). Like the works of art in that exhibition, these films examine the relationships between human and machine. Prepare for celluloid visions of modernization, mass production, machine marvels, and technological heroes from an automated age.
TUESDAY, MAY 1
10 am Modern Times (1936, 87 min.) Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed, and starred in this silent comedy in which his “Little Tramp” struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world.
1 pm WALL-E (2008, 98 minutes) A trash compactor robot in the distant future falls in love, takes a fantastic journey into space, and changes the fate of both robots and mankind in this animated Pixar film.

10 am Ex Machina (2015, 108 min.) In Alex Garland’s science fiction thriller, a programmer tests the synthetic intelligence of a humanoid robot to learn if it is genuinely capable of human qualities.
1:30 pm The Complete Metropolis (1927/2010, 148 min.) Fritz Lang’s classic film, in its restored edition, dramatizes the conflict between wealthy capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers, orchestrated by a scientist capable of destroying them both.

10 am Blade Runner: Final Cut (1982/2007, 117 min.) This definitive edition of Ridley Scott’s neo-noir film follows a twenty-first century detective who hunts for fugitive replicants, synthetic humans bioengineered to work on off-world colonies.
1:30 pm Blade Runner 2049 (2017, 164 min.) In Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to the 1982 film, set thirty years later, a blade runner uncovers a secret that threatens to instigate a war between humans and replicants.
