SeeBlackWomxn is an esteemed collective of artists, activists, and writers raised on Black feminist theory. Their platform emphasizes self-representation, free from the stereotypical tropes assigned to Black women. This partnership unfolds through a five-part event series centering the lineage and legacy of Black women and the contemporary Black Arts scene and features the voices of collective cofounders Tahirah Rasheed, Angela Hennessy, Dana King, and Jamani Montague.
About the Speakers
is a classical figurative sculptor who creates public monuments of Black Bodies in Bronze. She studies the strength and resilience of African descendants and creates pieces made of clay with her hands that are then cast in bronze. She believes sculpture provides an opportunity to shape culturally significant memories that determine how African descendants are publicly held and remembered. King’s public sculptures are located at the Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, in New Haven, CT, Berkeley, CA and soon, her latest bronze of Huey Newton, Co-Founder of the Black Panther Party will be installed in West Oakland, California. King is Chair of the Community Engagement Committee at the Oakland Museum of California where she has been a trustee for 8 years. She is also a co-founder of SeeBlackWomxn.

Tracy Brown is a Photographer, Interdisciplinary visual artist, curator, artivist, and San Francisco native. She received her MA in Arts Politics from Tisch at New York University and has spent more than a decade photographing funerals and memorials all over the world. Tracy has taught photography and visual culture in remote villages and urban centers globally. Tracy’s work has been exhibited at the CAAM, The MOAD, SOMArts, The AAACC, and private galleries and public art venues in places like Chicago, Detroit, Brooklyn, and Beijing. Tracy’s work is held in the permanent collections of The City of Oakland and the California African American Museum. Tracy was a participant in the groundbreaking takeover of the New Museum in New York City with a collective called Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter. Tracy also co-curated the Smoke and Mirrors exhibition which explored the devastating effect the war on drugs has had on Black and Brown communities. Her independently curated show Same Game Different Smokers: A look at Tobacco Industry’s Effect on Black Lives and Black Lungs was on view at the San Francisco Main Library for an extended run in 2020. Recently, Tracy participated in the recent exhibition Don’t Shoot, An Opus of the Opulence of Blackness. She also planned, curated and hosted a weeklong series of events titled The Benin To The Bay Series aimed at Celebrating African Spirituality while interrogating and helping to mend the African American community’s relationship with their indigenous traditions. Most recently, Tracy served as the San Francisco African American Cultural District representative in the seeding reciprocity grant trainers program as well as the curator for the Ancestral Souls Rising Global Memorial dedicated to people of African descent who have died from or during the time of COVID-19.
Lisa Dent is an advocate for living artists and cultural workers. Her background includes work in film, theater, and the visual arts as a curator, gallerist, writer, production designer, and creative producer. She is the Executive Director of Artspace New Haven, a nonprofit for contemporary art. Previously, Dent was the Director of Resources & Award programs at Creative Capital. Dent was a Helena Rubenstein Fellow at the MoMA and held curatorial staff positions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. From 2004-08, Dent owned Lisa Dent Gallery in San Francisco where she presented the work of emerging and mid-career international artists. Dent received her BFA from Howard University, her MFA from NYU, and completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in curatorial studies.
is a recognized curator, arts advocate, community leader, and pioneer in advancing contemporary diaspora art. She founded the Diaspora Vibe Culture Arts Incubator (DVCAI) to serve as a local and global laboratory dedicated to promoting, nurturing and cultivating the vision and diverse talents of emerging artists from the Caribbean Diaspora, artists of color, and immigrant artists. Twenty-five years later, DVCAI is recognized as a global resource and one of the region’s leading platforms dedicated to providing diaspora artists with a venue to explore and experiment with new forms and themes that challenge traditional definitions of the Caribbean and Latin American art. In addition to her service on several prominent boards, she is an active member of the PAMM Fund for African American Art and serves on The Cultural Affairs Council for Miami Dade County and Florida’s Department of Cultural Affairs panels. Her awards include The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center Third Annual Calabash Amadlozi Visual Arts Award, International Businesswoman of the Year, One of South Florida’s 50 Most Powerful Black Professionals. Her most recent curation of Inter | Sectionality: Diaspora Art from The Creole which closed at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Art + Culture in March January 2021, opens in the Miami Design District on February 5th, 2021, and will run through May 31, 2021.
