We are actively broadening opportunities for volunteers in all areas of the Museums. The primary focus of the volunteer program is to provide an energetic presence on the floor, but we are opening up positions in administrative areas as well. New positions will be posted as needed, so please continue to check back. Descriptions will indicate whether previous experience is necessary to be considered for these roles.
On the Floor
This role puts volunteers in the action on the floor of the museums. Volunteers can work in any number of locations, including at the Information Desk, Coat Check, Special Exhibitions, and the de Young Observation Tower.
Behind the Scenes/Administration
These volunteers provide as-needed support for various departments by assisting with mailings, filing, paperwork, and phone calls, among other duties. Volunteers gain a new perspective of museum and department functions by working in these administrative areas.
Most museumgoers do not know that volunteers create all the intricate flower arrangements in both museums. The Flower Committee works with a team to shop at the Flower Mart to design and create artistic fresh-flower arrangements at the de Young and the Legion of Honor. Professional floral experience or floral design degree required.
Friday Nights at the de Young
Volunteers have the opportunity to work Friday Nights at the de Young, a weekly series that runs from March through November. During these events the de Young stays open until 8:45pm and offers a variety of activities, including live music, films, lectures, artist demonstrations, and exhibition tours. Volunteers provide customer service support for these events by working in positions on the museum floor.
Volunteers in this role work in the Achenbach Print Room and Study Center at the Legion of Honor, and provide additional conservation support in other preservation departments as well. These positions are limited and available on an as-needed basis. Professional fine art management or conservation experience required.
Special Events and Projects
Volunteers are able to assist with various special events that take place at the Museums, such as the Fair Trade Bazaar and the Holiday Artisan Fair. They perform a variety of duties depending on the needs of the events, including check-in and registration, materials assembly, and hospitality assistance.
