How do I become a volunteer at the Fine Arts Museums?
The first step to becoming a volunteer is to fill out an application. You will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator for an interview as volunteer openings arise.
Where are the museums located?
Where can I put my belongings while I’m working my volunteer shifts?
A portion of the fourth floor of the de Young Museum serves as a dedicated, secure volunteer space. A portion of a lower-level office at the Legion of Honor is also used for volunteer storage. If working at the Information Desk or Parcel Check, volunteers are welcome to bring their belongings with them.
Do I have to be a certain age to be able to volunteer?
You must be at least 17 years old in order to volunteer at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Is a background in art history or fine arts required in order to volunteer?
While we encourage volunteers to have an interest in art and art history, extensive academic or museum-related experience is not necessary for most of our volunteer positions.
What type of time commitment should I expect as a volunteer?
Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of two shifts per month for at least three consecutive months. There are two shifts per day, running from 9 am to 1:15 pm and 1 pm to 5:15 pm. For our Friday Night events, there is also an evening shift that runs from 5 to 9 pm. The museums are both closed to the public on Mondays.
