de Young December Artist in Residence: Melissa Cody

San Francisco, November 2012—Fourth generation Navajo weaver, Melissa Cody, will occupy the Kimball Education Gallery from December 5 to December 27, as part of the de Young’s Artist-in-Residence Program. Cody works in the Germantown Revival style, while simultaneously venturing beyond rules of traditional design to draw inspiration from contemporary multi-media artists.

“By incorporating eclectic color schemes and bold, sharp lines, my work stands apart as a signifier of the new wave weaver. I find this to be vital in the continuation of creativity,” says Cody. During her residency at the de Young, Cody intends to create woven textiles that address environmental issues that affect "The Forgotten People," tribal members of her home region of the Navajo Reservation in rural Arizona.

Cody’s artistic endeavors have taken her from Arizona, to Washington DC, Southern Africa, and San Francisco. As an Artist-in-Residence at the de Young, Cody invites visitors to learn about the historical relevance and the creative and technical processes of the time-honored medium of weaving.

The Kimball Education Gallery is free and open to the public during museum hours. Visitors can interact with Melissa Cody Wednesday–Sunday, 1–5 pm.

Visiting the de Young Museum

The de Young is housed in a copper-clad landmark building designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. It showcases the institution’s significant collections of American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th to the 21st centuries; art from Oceania, Africa, and the Americas; a diverse collection of costumes and textiles; and international contemporary art.
