San Francisco, October 2012Instrument, the new solo work by Monique Jenkinson, is a vibrant exploratory dance collaboration premiering at San Francisco’s CounterPULSE in late November. Developed during Jenkinson’s current term as Artist Fellow at the de Young, this performance is inspired in part by the exhibition Rudolf Nureyev: A Life in Dance, currently on view at the museum. Together with choreographers Miguel Gutierrez, Chris Black, and Amy Seiwert, and dramaturge Selby Winn Schwartz, Jenkinson weaves together vastly different approaches to movement-making in this one-of-a-kind performance.

Jenkinson draws from ballet icon Rudolf Nureyev and performance art heroes of the ‘60s and ‘70s to explore dance as iconic movement, historical anecdote, and personal narrative. Instrument highlights the intersection of classical ballet and post-modern improvisation, and closely considers the evolution of ideas and movements as they are transferred from choreographer to dancer to audience member.

Creating and performing locally, nationally, and internationally, Jenkinson has appeared at venues in London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Reykjavik, New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, as well as ODC Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the de Young Museum, and CounterPULSE in San Francisco. Instrument is supported by the de Young, CounterPULSE, and the Bay Area’s Dancers’ Group.
