Auxiliaries of the Fine Arts Museums
Consisting of five membership groups, each associated with a separate region in the Bay Area, the Auxiliaries are made up of volunteers who fundraise to help support the Museums. Their activities include the coordination of Bouquets to Art, the Museums’ biggest annual fundraiser, in addition to smaller initiatives and social gatherings throughout the year.
San Francisco Auxiliary of the Fine Arts Museums
The San Francisco Auxiliary of the Fine Arts Museums is the largest and most active of the five groups. It was founded in 1949 and includes approximately 185 members. Each year, the Auxiliary forms committees that plan and execute Bouquets to Art (BTA), the Museums’ largest annual fundraiser. This beloved week-long fundraiser brings in an average of 58,000 guests each year, and raises approximately $250,000 to support the Exhibitions, Education, and Conservation departments, as well as programming. In addition to BTA, the Auxiliary also heads smaller fundraising initiatives for the Museums. The group has seven general meetings a year, held at either the Legion of Honor or the de Young. The meetings include private docent tours, the administration of Auxiliary business, and opportunities to socialize.
Each winter, the group opens to new members. These members are typically sponsored by existing members and are introduced to the group throughout the spring. Auxiliary dues are $100 annually and all members must maintain an annual membership to the Museums. Members need not live in San Francisco; those from all around the Bay Area are welcome.
For more information about Auxiliary membership, please contact the Membership Chair, Nancy Noakes, at (415) 208-8915.
The Suburban Auxiliaries are groups ranging from 40-140 members who reside in specific geographic areas. These groups support museum activities by volunteering at Bouquets to Art, underwriting lectures, and by making independent donations to the Education department and other museum programs. All groups meet throughout the year to participate in docent tours, tours of private homes, luncheons, presentations, and more. All the Auxiliaries require members to maintain a current membership to the Museums in addition to individual dues which range from $75-$150 annually.
