Whitney Lynn utilizes a wide range of media to reframe narratives of familiar objects and images. Drawing connections between art history and popular culture, her work explores issues of boundaries and containment, history and restaging, context and form. During her residency at the de Young, Lynn will install a new body of work inspired by the museum’s collection of tools and implements, specifically focusing on the creation of traps, lures, and decoys. Museum visitors will have the opportunity to participate in the construction of deceptive objects, using source material contributed or provided.

Whitney Lynn was born on Williams Air Force Base in 1980. She received her BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University and MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. Framed by a desire to complicate boundaries, her project-based work employs tactics of appropriation and expanded forms of sculpture, performance, drawing, photography, video, and public projects. In 2016, Lynn was the first-ever National Artist-in-Residence at The Neon Museum in Las Vegas and additional museum projects include Searching for Diogenes, 2014, a three-part performance and installation staged at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Brats (Formation), 2014, a series of sculptures exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum; and Act (Alteración), 2012, an intervention commissioned by the Kadist Art Foundation and performed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work is in the permanent collection of The Neon Museum and in private collections in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Havana, Barcelona, and Göteborg.
