College Programs

The Museums’ web site is an excellent place to start researching our collection. Visit the permanent collection pages at the de Young or the Legion of Honor, or use the ImageBase to search more than 80,000 images from the collection!

Docent-led tours are available for college classes that come with their professor or instructor from any accredited college. Tours must be arranged four weeks in advance and are about 45 minutes long. Currently, we offer tours of our permanent collections and special exhibitions. Please note that tours of special exhibitions have a fee.

Educators are also welcome to lead their classes on self-guided tours through either the de Young or the Legion of Honor. Reservations must be made two weeks in advance. Please note that self-guided tours of special exhibitions have a fee.

Classes that wish to sketch in the permanent collections must obtain special permission and make a reservation four weeks in advance by filling out the College Reservation Form.

Prior to the visit, instructors are asked to prepare students with the museum guidelines included in the Sketching Permit. Remit the signed permit by fax to 415.750.3540 or by email to cinaba@famsf.org.

Museum Drawing, Art 131A and 131B
Taught by Rick Rodrigues, this class is designed to develop drawing skills and techniques by sketching from major works in the Legion of Honor and the de Young.

Art History
Courses are taught by Maria Cheremeteff and relate to the collections at the Legion of Honor. Most classes are taught in the Florence Gould Theater.

The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts houses the Museums’ collection of works on paper (prints, drawings, and photographs) and is available for classes of up to 20 students to engage with works from the permanent collection. Object selection and class sessions are coordinated by a curator in the department.

Each year, the de Young hosts a Student Showcase event in conjunction with Friday Nights at the de Young when local students are invited to submit and exhibit works of art in relation to a specific theme or special exhibition. The next event will be held on April 19, 2013.  This year's theme is Everyday Worlds: Interiors and Exteriors.  All submissions must be received by midnight on Friday, March 15, 2013. Unpaid internships are available for students in the Education Department. Academic credit is available.
