Leading West Coast poets will read their work in a publication event for Postmodern American Poetry: A Norton Anthology, 2nd Edition, edited by Paul Hoover, poet and professor at San Francisco State University. Featuring: Michael McClure, Bill Berkson, Michael Palmer, Norma Cole, Aaron Shurin, Laura Moriarty, Elizabeth Robinson, Stephen Ratcliffe, Maxine Chernoff, Gillian Conoley, Andrew Joron, Will Alexander, Clark Coolidge, Rusty Morrison, Joseph Lease, and K. Silem Mohammed.
This volume updates the groundbreaking first edition, which traced the development of alternative poetry in the post-1950 period, including the Beats, New York School, Projectivism, and language poetry, to which the editor has added conceptual poetry, proceduralism, cybernetic poetry including flarf, written with the assistance of online search engines, and a new generation of "post-language lyric" poetry. The second edition has received a starred review in Publishers Weekly, which called it "stunning" and "an essential book for students and serious fans of poetry." Reviewer Donna Seaman commented in Booklist that each new writing approach "yields poems of provocation, mystery, wit, even beauty, adding up to an engrossing and defining collection." The book will be available for purchase and signing in the museum's bookstore.
