Wilsey Court, de Young
Bringing together the sounds and experience of one of Africa’s greatest young kora players, Karamo Susso, and the skills of a few of the Bay Area’s top musicians, Roots of Manding creates a new blend of Manding music with American funk and jazz. The kora is an instrument more than 700 years old, with a major role in both historical records and creativity in West Africa. Karamo Susso started playing kora as a tiny child and was performing for large crowds before he was even big enough to hold the instrument up by himself. Audiences have been mesmerized and moved by his evocative music, dazzled by the precision of his hands as they flash up the strings, quickened by the passion and culture he articulates in gusts and expansions.
Artist Fellow Todd T. Brown presents a series of performances and panel discussions with Red Poppy Art House resident artists and special guests as part of his fellowship at the de Young.
