Bridge Walkers, an Interactive audio and video installation created San Francisco–based filmmaker and installation artist Catherine Herrera, a Cultural Encounters Commissions artist.
Bridge Walkers honors those people who build bridges of cultural understanding and cooperation. Bridging both the physical space of the Hamon Tower and the natural vista from the tower to the Pacific Ocean, this three-screen installation sets the stage with music, sound, and video for a sacred and meditative retreat from which to consider what it means, today, and in the past, to "bridge cultures." Audiences are invited to become "bridge walkers" by joining in an interactive, symbolic rebuilding of cultural bridges. The Bridge Walkers Installation is as much a tribute to the Olmec culture and its enduring cultural resonance as it is to San Francisco’s Ohlone (Costanoan) people, who bridged time, bringing forth cultural tradition for present and future generations. Bridge Walkers seeks to invoke the spiritual and cultural as a bridge across time.
The Bridge Walkers Installation is inspired too by the artist’s participation as a member of the Native American Programming Advisory Committee, an innovative program at the de Young bringing together Bay Area Native artists in collaboration with the museum to create enduring, bridge-building Native art programming.
The Bridge Walkers Installation is a Cultural Encounters Commissions work funded by the Wallace Foundation.
