Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos: "Puro y Clasico"
In honor of the opening of the Picasso exhibition, Caminos Flamencos performs ensemble and solo dances from neoclassic De Falla to raw, improvised flamenco, from modern to traditional. Directed by Emmy Award–winning choreographer Yaelisa and recognized for their innovative creations, this world class company brings some of the finest flamenco artists in the country today to the de Young, including singer Jose Cortes, Jason McGuire "El Rubio," dancers Melissa Cruz, Fanny Ara, and Marina Elana, and artistic director Yaelisa.

Join our art teachers in all ages hands-on art-making: Ruffles, Flounces, and a Flurry of Lunares (polka dots). The art activity will be ruffled cuffs and ascots. We will use special distressed tissue paper, print designs (polka dots and exquisite patterns), and attach with ribbons.

In Koret Auditorium
7:00 p.m. (free, limited seating, no reservations)
Special lecture: "Spaniards in France: Cristóbal Balenciaga and Pablo Picasso," by professor James Housefield, scholar of modern art and design, U.C. Davis

Balenciaga and Picasso made international reputations as modern Spanish masters while living as expatriates in France. By analyzing ways that Balenciaga's fashions and Picasso's art engaged with Spain's cultural heritage, this illustrated talk outlines divergences and convergences in their careers. These reveal changing attitudes about Spain in modern times and highlight shared aspects of their creativity, which led photographer Cecil Beaton to proclaim Balenciaga “the Picasso of fashion.”
