Closing Reception for October Artist-in-Residence, Maori weaver Glenda Joyce Hape

Hape’s strong passion, expressed in multiple media, draws attention to traditional and contemporary weaving techniques in the context of traditional Maori costume, especially as it relates to kakahu (cloaks).Hape acknowledges the social units of marae, whānau, hapū, and iwi as strong informants in her thinking and inspiration for creating artwork. For her current project, Hape is collaborating with glass artist Te Rongo Kirkwood. This collaboration provides challenges of medium and draws parallels to weaving natural material.

Every month the museum invites artists to install work and demonstrate their artistic process for the de Young’s Artist-in-Residence program. This interactive program enables visitors to meet artists working with various media. Artists are on site Wednesdays–Sundays, 1:00–5:00 p.m. (until 8:45 p.m. on Fridays through November).
