Bridge Walkers Installation and Short Documentary by Catherine Herrera
Filmmaker and artist Catherine Herrera’s Bridge Walkers is an immersive three-screen video installation that situates the viewer in the quiet, meditative space of the Hamon Tower observation level, with views of San Francisco’s dramatic landscape and the Pacific Ocean, to consider the large Ohlone shellmounds that once dotted the Bay Area landscape prior to contact. The sound of the ocean and seagulls envelopes the space, as the looped, lyrical, compelling visual footage invites the viewer to consider what society loses when sacred sites are not preserved.
A second video in the Bridge Walkers installation invites viewers into the world of a Maya ceremony at Teotihuacan in Mexico in preparation for the much-anticipated shift in the Maya calendar on December 21, 2012.
A third video screen projects a short seven-minute documentary featuring interviews with Ann Marie Sayers, an Ohlone elder; Corrina Gould, an Ohlone advocate for sacred sites; and L. Frank Manrique, a Tongva-Acjachemen artist who describes how Ohlone sacred sites were used in the past and today.
All together, the Bridge Walkers Installation asks the viewer to consider what is preserved when sacred sites are protected.
Tonight's Friday Nights at the de Young programs are free. Tickets are required to view the permanent collection or special exhibitions.
