"Wisdom and Power: Old Age in Ancient Mesoamerican Art"
by Simon Martin, Associate Curator, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
This lecture explores the varied representations of old age in Mesoamerica and shows its consistent connection to concepts of mental power. Simon Martin is widely known for his work on ancient Maya history, art, and religion, and is a specialist in reading their hieroglyphic writing. His major publications include Chronicle of the Maya Kings and Queens (with Nikolai Grube, 2000) and Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya (with Mary Miller, 2004), which served as the catalogue for the 2004–2005 exhibition at the Legion of Honor. Simon was also a consultant to the show Lords of Creation: The Origins of Sacred Maya Kingship organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Most recently he has been co-curator of MAYA 2012: Lords of Time at his own institution.
