SARAH WILSON with Catch Me Bird
in collaboration with Z Space and Stags' Leap Winery
Composer/trumpeter Sarah Wilson has emerged as "one of the most intriguing and promising composers and trumpeters on the contemporary music scene"
(Derk Richardson, San Francisco Chronicle).
Her music has premiered nationally and internationally and she earned wide critical acclaim for her 2010 Brass Tonic Records release, Trapeze Project. This CD features herself on trumpet and vocals with clarinetist Ben Goldberg, pianist Myra Melford, bassist Jerome Harris, and drummer Scott Amendola and showcases her "...danceable, visually evocative, and melodic music that is both sophisticated and accessible" (Jazziz).
Wilson writes music "evocative, elegant and comfortably familiar all at once"(Time Out NY), which has stylistically evolved through a diverse experience with jazz, theater, film, animation, performance art and traditional music studies.

The Project
Bay Area composer, trumpeter, singer-songwriter Sarah Wilson will premiere, "Off the Walls" a site-specific collaborative performance production funded by the Gerbode and Hewlett Foundations featuring her music and choreography by LA-based dance company, Catch Me Bird.
Catch Me Bird
Equal parts reality show and high-powered contemporary dance, Catch Me Bird (C. Derrick Jones and Nehara Kalev ) transforms ups and downs of relationships into artistic journeys, beginning with their performance wedding. A daring mix of intimate portraits and madcap theatrical episodes take you to the heart of a marriage that redefines strength in a union between two equals. The duo creates reality performance that grapples with the lunacy of being in a partnership that exists both onstage and offstage. Catch Me Bird debuted in Los Angeles in 2004 with a full-length collaboration; a combination of their actual wedding and an evening of dance, theater and aerial performance. They invited friends, family, and the public to witness an evening of high-powered performance, driven by a story that was true. Anniversary performances inspired by the elements of Paper (2005) Silk (2008) and Iron (2010) continued the chronicles of their evolving relationship, and made them the pioneers of reality performance.
Z Space
Founded in 1993, Z Space is a hub for artists and audiences to revel in the creation, development, and production of outstanding new work. They commission, develop, and produce a full season of new works from a variety of disciplines including theater, dance, music, performance art, and new media. They foster opportunities around the nation for these works and for their Bay Area artists. They engage diverse audiences through direct interaction with the process, the projects, and the artists.
Stags' Leap Winery
The Stags' Leap Winery Artist in Residence program began almost 20 years ago as a Poets' Weekend to celebrate the winery's 100th Anniversary. Over the years, the program has included poet laureates, painters, sculptors and conceptual artists from all over the United States. Today, with Sarah Wilson's residency, Stags' Leap Winery is very excited to welcome its first musician to the Artist in Residence program. Stags' Leap Winery looks to providing a setting that serves as an inspiration to Sarah, as she fills the vineyards with ethereal musical vibrations.
This project has been generously funded by The James Irvine Foundation’s Innovation Fund. Additional funding for the commissioning and production of the world premiere of Off the Walls is made possible by The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation and The William & Flora Hewlett Foundation Composer Collaboration Awards 2010 initiative.
