Spirit Boat Directions – Totem boats for personal journeys
Jennifer Ewing is a staff artist at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a muralist, and a teacher. Since 2005 she has used the theme of spirit boats as a metaphor for her own journey in paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, and installations. The Kimball Gallery becomes a site for embarkation enhanced with directions and meaning. The west wall is symbolic of water and supports a “spirit boat harbor.” Boats hung in space to the south represent the element of air.
The Artist Studio program is supported by the Fleishhacker Foundation.
The Artist Studio program is a part of FAMSF’s Cultural Encounters initiative designed to attract new and diverse audiences to the Museums. Cultural Encounters is generously funded by the James Irvine Foundation, The Wallace Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Columbia Foundation, and the Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation.
