Spirit Boat Directions – Totem boats for personal journeys

Jennifer Ewing is a staff artist at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a muralist, and a teacher. Since 2005 she has used the theme of spirit boats as a metaphor for her own journey in paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, and installations. The Kimball Gallery becomes a site for embarkation enhanced with directions and meaning. The west wall is symbolic of water and supports a “spirit boat harbor.” Boats hung in space to the south represent the element of air.
