Friday Nights at the de Young, Oct 26
Tanzila "Taz" Ahmed and Zahra Noorbakhsh
Join us for the return of Friday Nights at the de Young! This special Fall season runs for nine Fridays from September 28–November 23. All Friday nights will feature reduced admission to the special exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions, and free admission to the main-level galleries. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended and can be purchased below.
On Friday, October 26, we're excited to host the cool and hilarious podcast #GoodMuslimBadMuslim for a live recording. Comedian Zahra Noorbakhsh and writer / activist Tanzila "Taz" Ahmed bring their satirical talents to the de Young as they discuss the good and the bad of the American Muslim female experience. #GoodMuslimBadMuslim has been celebrated on Oprah Magazine, Wired, Mother Jones, and more. This will be a live taping, so please arrive at the Piazzoni Murals Room before 7 pm, and plan to remain seated for 45–60 minutes. This event is free, but seating will be limited to first-come, first-served.
Beginning at 6 pm, our musical guest Keenan Webster brings the West African Kora string instrument to Wilsey Court. Webster’s musical background includes African, Cuban, and Jazz musical styles, and he also draws on the music traditions of Latin America, Sumatra, and India.
Inspired by the art and fashion of the show? Get your creativity on at our art-making station in Wilsey Court. A selection of food and drink will be available from the museum cafe, including halal choices and creative non-alcoholic “mocktails.” Another not-to-be-missed Friday Night experience is the Turrell Skyspace (located outside the museum sculpture garden). Beginning 20 minutes before sunset each night, viewers’ perceptions of the sky color will be subtly altered by an L.E.D. lighting system inside the chamber, and by changing light and weather conditions outside the chamber.
Admission is free to the main-level galleries and performances in the Piazzoni Murals Room and Wilsey Court. Tickets to Contemporary Muslim Fashions are reduced to $14 adult and $6 youth on Friday Nights between 5–8:30pm. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended.
