Friday Nights at the de Young, Oct 19
Join us for Friday Nights at the de Young! This special Fall season runs every Friday through November 23. All Friday Nights feature reduced admission to the special exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions, and free admission to the main-level galleries. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended.
6 pm - Tonight's musical guests, The Aswat Women’s Ensemble have been hailed by KQED’s The Do List as “one of the jewels of the Bay Area music landscape.” Their performance, Faces of Love, includes the greatest songs originally performed by the Arab World's most beloved female singers. The Aswat Women’s Ensemble is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic female ensemble that reaches out to the diverse Bay Area community with folkloric, classical, contemporary, and sacred Arab music.
7 pm - Hear from activist fashion journalist Hoda Katebi, the voice behind JooJoo Azad, the radical fashion publication “with a fierce message.” Her book, Tehran Streetstyle is the first-ever in-print celebration and documentation of illegal fashion in Iran. Katebi will present a series of three 10-minute talks in the Piazzoni Murals Room beginning at 7 pm covering topics on the politics of fashion, Tehran Streetstyle, and her personal story.
Inspired by the art and fashion of Contemporary Muslim Fashions? Get your creativity on at our art-making station in Wilsey Court. A selection of food and drink will be available from the Museum Cafe, including halal choices and creative non-alcoholic “mocktails.” Another not-to-be-missed Friday Night experience is the James Turrell Skyspace (located in the Osher Sculpture Garden). Beginning 20 minutes before sunset each night, viewers’ perceptions of the sky color will be subtly altered by an L.E.D. lighting system inside the chamber, and by changing light and weather conditions outside the chamber.
Admission is free to the main-level galleries and performances in Piazzoni Murals Room and Wilsey Court. Tickets to Contemporary Muslim Fashions are reduced to $14 adult and $6 youth on Friday Nights between 5–8:30pm. Advance tickets to the exhibition are recommended.
