Laura Dowling is chief floral designer at the White House, a position she assumed in October 2009. In this position, she manages decor and flowers for a broad range of events, including state dinners, parties, and receptions, as well as creating flowers for the White House state rooms, the East Wing and West Wing offices, and the private residence. She works in the “new garden” style, a romantic style of flower arranging with free-flowing lines of vines and flowers emanating from a classical bouquet. Laura says that this style is most evocative of nature and the garden, and she balances a strong artistic vision with the wildness of nature. For the past 12 years, she has studied French floral art under the direction of leading Parisian designers. Recently, she has also studied with German designer Gregor Lersch, one of the world’s most innovative and exciting floral philosophers. Laura’s flowers have been featured in several design magazines, including Country Home, Beautiful Interiors, and Veranda. Earlier this year, she received the Frances Jones Poetker award from the American Horticultural Society for her achievements in and contributions to floristry.
