Artist Reception Friday Night, July 31
My Museum is an interactive project that connects the de Young collections with museum visitors. This project attempts to break down a perceived wall between the museum and its community, between artists and art appreciation, and the function of the museum as an institution. My Museum involves the public as curators, critics, and creative participants with the goal of constructing an archive of collective user experiences. Interactive platforms, personal maps, walking tours, and postcards will highlight individual responses to the de Young collections.
Chris Treggiari and Victoria Mara Heilweil's artistic collaboration utilizes social practice, community engagement, and participatory strategies to provide a platform for the sharing of voices to empower museum users through art and art making.
Treggiari's artistic practice investigates how art can penetrate the public realm by connecting a wide range of people, neighborhoods, and communities. He focuses on highlighting diverse identities, shared histories, and personal stories through participatory, mobile platforms that encourage exploration from the viewer. Chris has shown internationally at the Venice Biennale, American Pavilion in 2012 as well as nationally at Torrance Art Museum, the Getty, Berkeley Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose. He has received grants from the Puffin Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Creative Work Fund, the Arts Commission of San Jose, The Seattle Center Foundation, Oakland Arts Commission, U.S Bank, and the Zellerbach Foundation.
Heilweil is a nationally exhibited photographic artist, curator, and educator. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Intersection for the Arts, Southern Exposure, Artworks Downtown, Rayko Photo Center, the ZERO1 Biennial, Wall Space Gallery, the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, the University Art Gallery at CSU Chico, the Minneapolis Photo Center, Perspective Fine Art in Evanston, IL, the Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth, VA and the Washington Square Art Galleries in New York City.
